A honest letter from the people who built Orange Bags long before Instagram existed

In 1996, my father and uncle started making bags.

No website. No social media. No influencers. No algorithm. Just two brothers, a city they knew well, and a belief that a good bag — honestly made, fairly priced — would always find its people.

It did.

For 29 years, Orange Bags grew through handshakes. Through retailers who trusted the product enough to keep reordering. Through wholesale relationships built over chai and honest conversation. Through customers who came back not because they saw an ad, but because the bag they bought three years ago still looked good.

We never needed the internet to sell.

So why are we here now?

The honest answer is not what you might expect. We did not come online because the world changed. We came online because we finally felt ready to meet it.

The Years We Said No

There were conversations — many of them — about taking Orange Bags online. Every year, someone would suggest it. A relative. A friend. A retailer who had started selling on marketplaces.

Every year, we said not yet.

Part of it was caution. We had watched brands rush online, cut corners on quality to chase volume, and slowly become something their founders would not recognise. The marketplace race to the bottom — lower price, faster shipping, cheaper material — felt like a trap we did not want to walk into.

Part of it was pride. Our bags were being sold in good stores. Our wholesale business was strong. We did not need the validation of a blue tick or a viral reel to know the product was good.

And part of it, honestly, was fear. Not of technology. But of losing the thing that made Orange Bags what it is. The directness. The personal relationship. The ability to look someone in the eye and say — this bag will last you years, and mean it.

What Changed

A few things happened at once.

First, we started hearing from customers we had never met. People who had bought an Orange Bag through a retailer, loved it, and spent real time trying to find us directly. They wanted to buy again. They wanted to gift one. They wanted to know if we made other styles. And we had no way to reach them back.

That felt wrong.

Second, we looked at what the online bag market in India had become. Fast fashion bags dressed up in good photography. Products that looked expensive in a flat lay and fell apart in three months. Brands with beautiful Instagram feeds and no real story behind them.

We had the opposite problem. A real story. 29 years of it. And nowhere to tell it.

Third — and this is the honest one — our next generation got involved. Fresh eyes. A different relationship with how the world discovers things. A genuine belief that Orange Bags deserved to be found by more people.

They were right.

We did not come online to become a different brand. We came online to finally introduce ourselves properly.

What Has Not Changed

The bags are made the same way they have always been made.

The same attention to zipper quality. The same insistence on lining that does not peel after six months. The same rejection of samples that feel slightly off in the hand even when they look fine in a photo.

We have rejected more samples in the last year of preparing to launch than some brands produce in total. That is not an exaggeration. It is just the standard we cannot bring ourselves to lower.

The prices are honest. Not artificially inflated to create the illusion of luxury. Not raced to the bottom to win a marketplace ranking. Just the real cost of making a good bag, with a margin that lets us keep making them.

The people are the same people. The brothers who started this. The family that grew around it. The knowledge that comes from being in every part of this industry — wholesale, retail, manufacturing — for nearly three decades.

What We Hope For

We hope you find us before you need us.

We hope that when your bag finally gives up — and every bag eventually does — you remember that somewhere online there is a brand that has been making them since before you were on Instagram.

We hope the bags earn your trust the same way they earned the trust of every retailer who kept reordering for 29 years. Not through a clever campaign. Not through a discount code. Through the simple experience of carrying one every day and realising it just works.

29 years is a long time to wait for an introduction.

We think you were worth it.

Thank you for being here. Whether you found us through Instagram, a friend, or a Google search at midnight — we are glad you did.

with love, Orange 🧡
